Journal Entry # 1

September 28, 1850

I first found out about the compromise of 1850 from a newspaper that I was reading. My family had always believed in slavery so when the Fugitive Slave Law Act was passed my family was very happy. My family is very wealthy and we live on a big plantation so we have about 100 slaves. Due to this new law we would be able to get slaves back for a lot cheaper then buying them off the auction block. My father told me to find some men so that they could go and collect slaves from the North, We would pay the bounty hunters $5 a slave. I was proud that the government had passed this law because it would show the North that no matter what the do we will always win. It would also put a bunch of blacks who are wandering around the North back to there rightful place working in the fields. It has been 10 days after the law has been passed and my family has already regained 15 slaves. I have also noticed that there is a tension growing very rapidly between the states. There has also been talk of a Civil War and if it results in it I will fight for slavery to be kept.
